The Cambridge Bears men's and women's track and field teams traveled to River Ridge High School in Woodstock, Georgia to compete in the River Ridge High School Home Meet #1 on Thursday, March 14, 2013. With a combined total of 44 athletes competing in Thursday's event, the Track and Field teams collectively demonstrated increasing levels of strength, speed, agility, and determination. Four schools participated in the River Ridge meet: Cambridge, Fannin County, River Ridge, and Mount Pisgah Christian School. The Cambridge women's team placed third with a total of 37 points, while the men's team also placed third with a total of 49 points.
Several Cambridge athletes delivered first place finishes in their respective events boosting Cambridge's overall meet standing in the process. Congratulations go to Ali LoPiccolo for her first place finish in the 300 Meter Hurdles (52.66) and for her additional first place finish in the High Jump (5-02.00). Olivia Sieverts joins the leader board with her first place finish in the Long Jump (14-07.00). On the men's side, Austin Thistleton took first place in the 800 Meter Run (2:11:69).
The men's standout of the night was Senior Hawk Hammer who personally delivered 11 points to Cambridge's overall tally. These points do not include the additional 11 points Cambridge received for his role on both the 4x100 Meter Relay and 4x400 Meter Relay in which Cambridge came in second and third, respectively.
The women's standout of the night was Sophomore Ali LoPiccolo who personally contributed 12 points to Cambridge's overall tally for her first place finishes in the High Jump and 300 Meter Hurdles.
The women's track and field team consistently delivered top three finishes in most events starting with Lacey Wolter's third place finish in the 100 Meter Dash (13:96) ending with the Cambridge High School 'A' team's third place finish in the 4x100 Meter Relay (Lauren Stewart, Olivia Sieverts, Caroline Gloster, Lacey Wolter with a 52.93 finish). In between, Cambridge picked up points for Caroline Willis' third place finish in the 1600 Meter Run (6:07.12), and Alyssa Cleveland's fourth place finish in the High Jump.
The men's track and field team demonstrated a thirst for victory as demonstrated by their numerous top three finishes. Dashun Soto (12.02) and Hawk Hammer (12.06) kicked off strong with respective second and third place finishes in the 100 Meter Dash. Jalen Swarns then gave the Bears an additional six points for his two third place finishes in both the 200 Meter Dash (24.59) and 400 Meter Dash (56.93).
Freshman Bjorn Leicher effectively navigated the 1600 Meter Run with an impressive 4:52.90 third place finish and took to the track later in the evening to deliver a third place finish in the 4x400 Meter Relay along with Hawk Hammer, Rayvon Moss, and Jalen Swarns.
Elijah Abley and Hawk Hammer showcased their effective balance between speed and grace with third and fourth place finishes in the 110 Meter Hurdles.
On the field, Jesse Ortega delivered points his 38-02.00 Shot Put, and Tyren Cabellos managed a noteworthy 94-01.25 Discus Throw.
Congratulations to both the men's and women's track & field teams for really bearing down on their competitors at the River Ridge meet. The performance demonstrated that these athletes are in it to win it this season.
