The Lady Bears Varsity Soccer team dropped its match with cross town rival Milton 3-1 on Monday night, Feb. 23rd.
While the Bears stacked up well against the Milton team in terms of time of possession and control of the ball, conceding and defending corner kicks proved to be their Achilles heel during the match.
The match was scoreless through the first 25 minutes, with neither team generating quality scoring chances. Milton opened the scoring in the 26th minute when they were able to put their foot on a well-played corner kick for the first goal of the game. That was quickly followed in the 28th minute by a Milton header that found its way into the top of the goal off of another corner kick.
The match went to halftime with Milton leading 2-0 but Milton quickly extended their lead to 3-0 early in the second half (46th minute) when they connected one again off a corner kick and found the goal. The Lady Bears continued to compete and their effort was rewarded when Charlotte Teeter converted a penalty kick in the 65th minute to close the gap to 3-1. The Lady Bears appeared to generate an opportunity to further close the gap to 3-2 shortly thereafter, in the 67th minute, on what appeared to be a penalty committed by Milton inside their own box. However, the referee failed to award the penalty and there was no scoring for the remainder of the match. The final was Milton 3, Cambridge 1.
The Lady Bears will open their Region 7 schedule against North Atlanta on Monday, March 2 at 5.55pm (at North Atlanta High School).
The Lady Bears return home for another Region 7 match against North Springs on Friday, March 6 at 7.55pm.
