Title: Varsity Track Head Coach; Hurdles

 My Track Journey

Growing up in Stone Mountain I played football, basketball, and baseball. At the time SMH was grades 8-12, so as an 8th grader I ran track for the first time. I started as a distance runner until Coach Richard Medlin asked if anyone wanted to try hurdles. I did and the rest as they say is history.

My junior year I ran 37.49 in the 300 Hurdles which at the time was the 6th fastest in the country. This caught the attention of colleges and universities, but there was one problem, football was my first love. I was given a preferred walk-on spot as a receiver at Western Carolina if I would run track. My main events turned out to be the 400, 400 hurdles and 4x400 relay. Yes, 3- 400’s every meet! I completed my college career as an all-conference performer in those races with personal best of 48.24, 52.18, and relay split of 47.2. My football career ended as team Captain and all-conference receiver my senior year in 1991.

I studied Sport Management with a concentration in sales and marketing and worked in that field for 17 months before I realized I needed to coach. I had the privilege to begin coaching at my alma mater Stone Mountain in 1993 as head coach. In 1998, I moved to Roswell High as head coach until 2003. 2003-2004 I was head Middle School football and assistant varsity track coach in Virgina at Fork Union Military Academy. I returned in the fall of 2005 to Roswell for the next 11 years as Head Track, assistant football and associate athletic director. I took a year off coaching in my first year at River Ridge in 2017 but took over as head coach from 2018 until my retirement in 2023.

In 2024-25 I worked as a project manager for a commercial HVAC company managing projects across the USA, but something was missing in my life, teaching Special Education and coaching.

In 2025, I returned here to Cambridge teaching Special Education Math and as Head Flag Football and Track coach.

My why is obvious, I love teaching and coaching. I want our athletes to understand why we do certain drills, why their feet should strike the ground in a particular position, why they need to make sure they hydrate and fuel the body, along with many additional aspects of running, jumping, and throwing.

I have hosted hundreds of track meets from duals to large invitationals, county and region events, along with sectionals twice. I love putting on a great experience for both athlete and spectator. Many of you have coached, competed, or spectated at these events. I hope to bring these same qualities to Cambridge High School this school year and beyond
