2025-26 GHSA 6-AAAA All Region Coach of the Year
David Akin enters his fifth season as the boys' basketball coach at Cambridge High School. Akin has led the Cambridge basketball program to 50 wins in 4 seasons, with 43 of those wins coming in the last three seasons. The Cambridge program has reached the state tournament twice in the past three seasons. Cambridge reached the region championship in Akin's second year (2022-23 season) but lost to the eventual state champion Kell High School. Cambridge then lost in the first round of the state tournament. In 2023-24 season, Cambridge amassed 16 wins, winning 11 out of 13 during the season, including 8 in a row during that stretch. Last season, Cambridge made the state tournament and advanced to the Sweet 16 round for only the second time in school history.
Prior to his time at Cambridge, Akin served as a head coach at Meadowcreek High School and East Jackson High School. He also served as an assistant basketball coach at Parkview High School, Milton High School and Athens Academy. Prior to teaching and coaching at the high school level, he was a part of the women's basketball staff at the University of Georgia under Hall of Fame coach Andy Landers. He was also the head coach of the Gwinnett Majic, a former minor league basketball organization out of Gwinnett County.
Akin earned his Bachelor's degree in Communications from Brewton-Paker College and was a member of the Brewton-Parker College basketball program, and their only ever national tournament team. He earned his Master's degree from the University of Georgia in Sport Management. He also earned a Specialist degree from Piedmont University in Instructional Technology. Akin attended Berkmar High School and was a member of the basketball program, which notably made the state championship his senior year.
A native of Lilburn, GA , Akin is married to the former Sarah Spivey of Lilburn, GA. The two currently reside in Milton with their dog, Winnie
