Bears Cross Country Teams Compete in Florida, Host Kodiak Meet at CHS

The Cambridge XC Bears competed in two meets this week, once in Florida and also as hosts of the first-ever Kodiak Classic.

On September 30th, 40 team members traveled to central Florida to compete at the West Orange Invitational in Winter Garden.  Competing against over 35 teams, the Cambridge Girls and Boys, Varsity and JV all finished in the top 3.

The Varsity Girls placed 3rd with scoring from Izzy Filipek ('21), Afton Hirschi ('20), Chloe Paskins ('18), Lily Elston ('18) and Maggie Morgan ('19). The JV Girls placed 1st. Scoring team members included Sarah Anderson ('20), Amanda Leekley ('19), Liz Willis ('19), Maddy Scandlen ('18) and Emma Flynn ('21).  Three JV girls also ran personal best times:  Christina Fortwengler ('18; 27:02), Sarah Fazzari ('20; 27:38) and Bella Bruen ('18; 30:55).

The Varsity Boys placed 1st. Jack Filan ('19) led the team, Chris Anderson ('18) ran a personal best of 16:56, and Anders Law ('20), Carson Ertwine ('19) and Zach Ellison ('18) also contributed to the scoring.  The JV Boys team finished 2nd, led by Jack Donovan's ('19) first place win and scoring from William Knapp ('18), Ethan Danciak ('20), Noah Bouton ('19) and Anthony Mattie ('20).  David Allan ('19) and Tyler Johnson ('21) also ran JV with personal best times of 20:36 and 20:54, respectively.

On October 3rd, the Cambridge XC team hosted the Kodiak Classic, a unique event which included a 500m track start, followed by 3 loops on our cross country trail and a finish on the field inside of the track.

The Varsity Girls team placed 1st overall.  Sophomore Ashley Sechrest led the way, setting a course record with a time of 20:48.  Isabel Suero ('19), Sarah Anderson, Liz Willis, Amanda Leekley, Katie Fishman ('18) and Maddy Scandlen all placed in the top 10.  The JV Girls team placed 2nd led by Michaela Prevallet's first place win and top-10 finishes from Annika Phelps, Caroline Redick, Annabelle Boone, Amber Brown, and Lily Parzych.

Another team first place finish was earned by the Varsity Boys.  Freshman Erik Holmen set a course record with a time of 18:57.  Tanner LeMaster ('18) finished two seconds later and Kaine Dudley ('21), Deacon Law ('20), Justin Doering ('21), Rishi Murudkar ('19), and Noah Bouton all placed in the top 10. The JV Boys team placed 1st overall.  The top 10 finishers included Kyler Wilson ('19), Colin Shin ('20), Yahya Merchant ('20), Anthony Mattie, Grant Oglesby ('20), Colby Jones ('21), Ethan Danciak and David Allan.

The XC Bears race Saturday, October 7th in Douglasville at the Asics XC Invitational, October 14th at the Coach Wood Invitational in Gainesville, and October 24th in the 6A Region 7 meet at Webb Bridge Park in Alpharetta.
