Ten Cross Country Lady Bears made the early morning trip to Cartersville for the Atlanta Track Club's annual Wingfoot XC Classic on September 23rd. Due to early successes this season, the Cambridge girls ran in the highly selective Championship Varsity and Championship JV races against the top runners in the state in what was almost the equivalent of an All Class state meet.
The JV Championship girls had the early 7:50am start and were led by junior Amanda Leekley. The rest of the team included Katie Fishman ('18), Annika Phelps ('20), Allie Maloney ('20) with a personal best 5K time of 26:33, Annabelle Boone ('18), Anjnee Rana ('18') setting a personal record (PR) of 26:59, and Bella Bruin ('18) coming in under 30 minutes to set a PR and meet her race goal.
The Championship Varsity Girls from Cambridge didn't have a full team this weekend, but senior Chloe Phelps ran a season best 20:16 continuing from a great race last week at Fulton County, and making the Lady Bears bid for a region championship and the podium at state that much stronger. Troyce Grant ('19) ran a solid 20:59, and Ashley Sechrest ('20) ran another sub-20 minute 5K finishing in 37th place out of a strong field of over 200.
This weekend, 40 team members will be running at the West Orange Invitational in Florida, followed a few days later by our first ever home meet, the Kodiak Classic on October 3. We're already halfway to the 6A Region 7 competition on October 24 at Webb Bridge Park.
