Dedicated summer training led both the boys and girls cross country teams to new school records at their first meet of the 2017 season, the Bob Blastow Early Bird Invitational, Saturday, August 26th.
Jack Filan ('19) broke the previous record set last year by 28 seconds, and Ashley Sechrest ('20) came in 42 seconds faster than the girls' two year old record. Jack, Ashley and Zach Ellison ('18) had times that met the Elite performance qualifications for the US Second team.
Four girls beat the old school record of 20:05, with Ashley leading the team and setting a new record of 19:23. Delaney Goodell ('19), Clarissa Beck ('19) and Izzy Filipek ('21) also broke the previous record, with Troyce Grant ('18), Chloe Paskins ('18), Chloe Phelps ('18) and Afton Hirschi ('20) rounding out the girls Varsity for an overall 5th place finish. For the JV girls race, Lily Elston ('18) and Isabel Suero ('19) medaled by finishing in the top 15, and the JV girls finished fourth overall. Maggie Morgan ('19) led the girls in the Open race, and medaled with a 4th place finish leading the Open girls to 6th place.
For the boys, Jack Filan ran in 15:53 to break the previous record of 16:21 and, along with Zach Ellison, Anders Law ('20), Mark Vandewater ('19), Carson Ertwine ('19), Josh Gargan ('20), Jack Donovan ('19) and William Knapp ('18), the team came in third place. The JV boys also had a strong showing with both Erik Holmen ('21) medaling in 15th place and newcomer Deacon Law ('20) just two seconds behind him. The JV boys finished fourth as a team. Freshmen Grant Oglesby outperformed the Open field with a second place finish, followed by Ethan Danciak ('20) in 8th, to lead the Open boys team to 3rd place
The team is excited about their prospects this season after a great start, 8 student athletes bringing home medals, and many setting new personal records.
The next meet on the schedule is at the Covered Bridge Run in Garrard Landing Park in Roswell on September 8th.
