Lady Bears JV Soccer vs Blessed Trinity Titans – Wednesday, February 7th, 2018

The Lady Bears played their second home game of the week against the Blessed Trinity Titans on another cold evening at Cambridge.  Despite a valiant effort from the home team, they could not stop the Titans from winning 3-0.

The Bears started well with a good break in the 2nd minute as Mariah Naegle (34) and Abby Fields (22) found themselves in the Titans penalty area but couldn't bring the ball under control to get a shot away.

The Titans then pinned the Bears in their half as they enjoyed a good spell of possession, but the Bears defended bravely. In the 10th minute Elle Cheevers (27) took possession of the ball in midfield, but couldn't find a forward pass. A timely interception a couple of minutes later by Nia Worrell (31) was needed to prevent the Titans from scoring.

The Titans were now looking dangerous and opened the scoring in the 16th minute. A throw in on the left found the Titans forward but her shot went wide. Almost immediately from the goal kick, the Titans retained possession and attacked the Bears goal, scoring with a hard but controlled shot that creeped inside the right-hand post. 1-0 Titans.

The Bears kept probing and tried to put the Titans defense under pressure, but couldn't find a shot to trouble the goal keeper As the first half came to an end, the Titans almost scored, but shot straight at Ashley Spina (41) in the Bears goal, who did well to hold onto the ball. A few seconds later Ashley Spina (41) had to smother the ball on the edge of the 18-yard box as the Titans threatened to score another goal. Half time 1-0 to the Titans.

The second half started with the Titans on the front foot again and required another important interception from Nia Worrell (31). The Bears then counter attacked but the move broke down as we approached the penalty area. Then in the 43rd minute Karina Naik (30) intercepted an attempted clearance, but as the ball bounced towards the goal, she couldn't get to it before the Titans goal keeper.

The Titans doubled their lead in the 48th minute after a good break down the right wing and a fine finish from their striker. 2-0 Titans. The goal spurred the Titans as they put the Bears under real pressure with multiple shots at goal. From a corner, Alaina Giglio (35) had to make a tremendous block to stop the Titans forward from an almost certain goal.

The Bears had a great chance to score in the 62nd minute when Abby Fields (22) played a fine through ball to Nia Worrell (31), unfortunately the shot was straight at the goal keeper. As the minutes ticked away, Alis Petty (0), who was now in the Bears goal, made a great save low to her left The Titans however managed to score again in the 67th minute with a firm shot across goal. The game ending 3-0 to the Titans.

Roswell Hornets vs Lady Bears JV Soccer – Thursday, February 8th 2018

The Lady Bears were in action for their third game this week looking to bounce back from two consecutive losses.

A frantic opening 5 minutes settled down as Abby Fields (22) had the first meaningful attempt at goal in the 6th minute. The Hornets then enjoyed a good spell of possession and passed the ball well, but with no real threat to the Bears goal.

The first goal arrived in the 14th minute when the ball fell favorably to the Hornets striker after an initial good save from Ashley Spina (41) in the Bears goal. 1-0 Hornets.

The Bears showed great spirit as first Mariah Naegle (34) ran down the right wing in the 18th minute but the Hornets defense held firm. Then in the 19th minute, Nia Worrell (31) went on a mazy dribble down the left beating 3 to 4 players but again the Hornets backline stood strong.

The Hornets gained the upper hand again as they forced Ashley Spina (41) into making several important saves as time was running out in the first half. Unfortunately, the Hornets scored goal number 2 in the 31st minute to end the half 2-0 to the good.

Despite the score, the Bears played valiantly in the second half but could not stop the Hornets from scoring their third goal in the 43rd minute. 3-0 Hornets.

The Bears continued to work hard and showed some promise in the 53rd minute with a good spell of passing in midfield and then again in the 54th minute as Abby Fields (22) attempted a long range shot from a throw in.

It was 4-0 to the Hornets in 57th minute, but the brave Bears kept going and won a free kick 40 yard from the Hornets goal. The Bears then forced a corner in the 58th minute and put the Hornets defense under pressure. Then in the 61st minute Nia Worrell (31) went on another good run and almost got a through ball to the forward line.

Despite pressure from the Bears, the Hornets scored a 5th goal in the 64th minute.

With 2 minutes to go, Ashley Spina (41) was injured as she bravely beat the Hornets forward to the ball as she scrambled of her line. The Hornets then in a moment of unsportsmanlike behavior scored another goal in the dying seconds to end the game 6-0.

It was a tough week for the Bears but we are resilient and we will dust ourselves off, work hard in practice and be ready to fight against the Duluth Wildcats at Cambridge on Wednesday, February 14th.
