Lady Bears JV Soccer Shuts Out Alpharetta, Monday, March 6th

The Lady Bears followed last week's magnificent 5-0 win against the Dunwoody Wildcats with a tenacious victory against a well-organized Alpharetta Raiders team at CHS on Monday, March 6th. A goal in each in half was enough for another well-deserved win for our Lady Bears, as they took the victory 2-0.

A shot from Molly Booker (24) in the 3rd minute and a clearance in the 8th from the Raiders goalkeeper, to stop Booker (24) again, were noteworthy highlights from a cagey opening 10 minutes from both sides.

A throw-in from Grace Cunningham (31) resulted in Shannon Royer (34) taking a speculative looping shot towards goal as the Lady Bears searched for the opening goal in the 11th minute. A short corner, coming from a counter attack for the Raiders, required a routine save from Caitlin Powers (0) in the 19th minute. This was the beginning of a 10 minute period when the Lady Bears defense came under some intense pressure. Powers (0) making another important save as a shot came in from the left side in the 19th minute.

After weathering that storm, the Lady Bears themselves nearly opened the scoring. A brilliant through ball from midfield found Samantha Nelson (32) sprinting towards goal in the 31st minute. Nelson's shot had the goalkeeper beaten, unfortunately the ball sailed just over the bar. However, the home crowd did not have to wait long for the opening goal, as it duly arrived in the 32nd minute. Grace Dass (29) scoring with a fine low finish to the goalkeeper's left. The move started with a throw-in on the left hand side followed by some precise passing in midfield.

The Lady Bears started the second half strongly, scoring our second goal in the 41st minute. A fine ball from Hanna Kanso (22) on the left wing was met confidently by Molly Booker (24) in the penalty area to slot it into the back of the net!  This spurred the Raiders, who came back strongly with a couple of very good chances in quick succession. A speculative long clearance from the Raiders goalkeeper required Caitlin Powers (0) to come off the goal line and smother the ball before it reached the Raiders forwards. Almost immediately the Raiders had another golden chance to pull a goal back, but fortunately for us, the shot glided narrowly over the bar in the 44th minute.

A long throw-in, deep into Raiders territory, from the right, created panic in the penalty area and almost gifted the Lady Bears a third goal as the goalkeeper fumbled the ball. In the 50th minute, the Raiders once again had a great opportunity to score. A long range shot almost creeping into our goal. A good break down the left from the Raiders midfield led to a corner and some sustained pressure, but the Lady Bears defense stood firm.

As the game approached the last 5 minutes, the Raiders arguably had their two best chances to score. The first needed a courageous save from Powers (0), rushing out bravely to stop the Raiders forward from scoring an almost certain goal. Then in the 68th minute Powers (0) made her best save of the game as she kept out a high looping shot that was going in just underneath the cross bar.

The Lady Bears held on to win the game 2-0 for their second victory in a row and are 4-1-1 for the season. Next we play the Blessed Trinity Lady Titans on Friday, March 10th.

Go Bears!
