Lady Bears Golfers Continue Strong Team and Individual Performances

March 11: Gwinnett Open

The Cambridge Varsity team competed in the Gwinnett Open at Chateau Elan on Saturday, March 11. The tournament was a modified Stableford format, so players competed for points instead of keeping a traditional golf score. Players earned one point for a bogey, two points for a par, and four points for a birdie. Heather Kipniss (12th) had her career round and shot an impressive two-under-par 69! She had five birdies on the back nine and earned 43 points, winning the first-place individual award for the tournament. Lindsey Smith (10th) earned 19 points, Amelia Green (11th) earned 17 points, and Parker Sylvester (12th) earned 11 points. Cambridge won an award for the third-place team (out of sixteen teams) with a score of 79!

 

Cambridge Player Spotlight

Senior Heather Kipniss played her career round of golf March 11 at the Gwinnett Open! She shot an impressive two-under-par 69, which is her lowest competitive score to date. Players and teams competed in a modified Stableford format tournament at Chateau Elan's Chateau Course, which meant that instead of keeping a traditional golf score, players earned one point for a bogey, two points for a par, and four points for a birdie. Heather had five birdies on the back nine and earned 43 points, winning the first-place individual award for the tournament! Kipniss commented, "Shooting a 69 was a great start to the season and I hope to keep improving on that to help contribute to the team." We agree, and we know you will, Heather!

Heather is the Cambridge Girls Golf program's first four-year senior ever. She is attending the University of Tampa next year on a golf scholarship and will be enrolled in the Honors College. Heather, we're proud to call you a Cambridge Bear, and we wish you the best of luck next year as you join the Spartans. 

 

March 14: vs. Alpharetta at Crooked Creek

Cambridge hosted Alpharetta High School for both a JV and Varsity match at Crooked Creek on March 14. What started as a cold day quickly got much colder, and the players even saw a few snowflakes at one point! Due the extreme cold, both matches ended early. The JV players completed four holes and the Varsity players completed five holes.

Heather Kipniss shot 25, Amelia Green shot 27, and Lindsey Smith and Parker Sylvester both shot 32 for the day, totaling up to a team score of 84 for five holes. The Lady Bears lost by one stroke to AHS, but they're ready for a rematch on Thursday, March 16!

Edy Borden shot 21, Maddie Tolbert shot 25, Luci Allen shot 26, and Vivian Milender shot 27, coming out to a team score of 72 for five holes, which beat Alpharetta by 7 strokes! 

 

March 16: vs. Alpharetta at Crooked Creek

Cambridge and Alpharetta faced off for the second match of the week, and this time Cambridge JV and Varsity both won by over 40 strokes!

Heather Kipniss led the Varsity team with a 37. Amelia Green followed with a 46, Lindsey Smith shot a 50, and Parker Sylvester finished with a 52.

Maddie Tolbert led the JV team with a 51. Hannah Cole shot a 54, Olivia Lawrence shot a 57, and Mackenzie Messier followed with a 58. 

 

Parkview Invitational: Saturday, March 18

The Cambridge Lady Bears competed in the Parkview Invitational on Saturday, March 18 at Stone Mountain Golf Club. What started out as a cold and rainy day slowly turned into a sunny beautiful day, and the girls placed fourth place out of fourteen teams!

Heather Kipniss shot a 77, placing third individually! Parker Sylvester shot a 95 and Amelia Green shot a 110, creating a team score of 282. The other players scored as follows: Edy Borden, 112; Mackenzie Messier, 120; Margeaux Messier, 122; Hannah Cole, 123; Mary Liz Covington, 132.
