Cambridge JV Softball Begins 2017 Season

JV Cambridge Softball started up the 2017 season racking up 2 wins and 3 losses.

Cambridge JV lost their first non-region game to Forsyth Central 3-2 on August 10th. The Bears lost despite out-hitting the Bulldogs five to four. Ariel Birnbaum and Lauren Cooper each collected multiple hits for the Bears. Birnbaum and Samantha Costanzo each drove in one run to lead the Bears. Sydney Herbold started the game for the Bears striking out 1 with 3 hits, and Lauren Cooper finished the game with 3 strike outs and 1 hit.

On August 15th, the JV Bears played at Cambridge against Creekview for a non-Region game and stayed in it until the end until Creekview pulled away late in a 6-2 victory. The game was tied at 1-1 with Creekview batting in the top of the fifth when a single off of Jesse Smith drove in one run. Sydney Herbold and Nicole Tanguay each drove in one run with their singles. Ariel Birnbaum led the offense with 3 hits and Lily Allen and Samantha Costanzo each contributed a hit. Jesse Smith took the loss for Cambridge giving up 2 earned runs, 13 hits, and 1 strike out.

On August 17th, the JV Bears suffered their first Region loss against Pope 13-5. The Bears captured the lead in the first inning but was not able to hold on to it. They attempted a strong comeback in the third inning scoring 4 runs thanks to a double by Nicole Tanguay and a single by Lauren Cooper and Samantha Costanzo. Costanzo, Tanguay, Cooper, and Ansley Whitson each drove in one run to lead Bears and Birnbaum hit a triple in the 1st inning. The Bears didn't commit a single error in the field. Cooper was on the mound for 4 innings taking the loss, striking out 2 batters, giving up 10 runs and 11 hits. Sydney Herbold came in to relief for an inning struck out 1 batter and gave up 3 hits and runs.

The Cambridge JV came in with a big win Monday, August 21st when they defeated Milton 5-0. The Bears had six hits in the game. Ariel Birnbaum and Lauren Cooper each collected two hits, Samantha Costanzo and Liz Seymour each had 1 hit. Pitcher Lauren Cooper got the win, not allowing a single hit, striking out 4 and walking 3.

Cambridge won their second game in a row after the Bears jumped out to an early lead over Hillgrove and took home a 9-1 victory on Wednesday August 23rd. The Bears collected seven hits with a big 4th inning when they scored 6 runs including a home run by Ansley Whitson. Other big hitters included Nicole Tanguay with a triple and a single, Ariel Birnbaum with a triple and a double, a double from Sydney Herbold, and a single from Lily Allen. Lauren Cooper gets the win with 3 KOs, and only 2 hits.
