Lady Bears Varsity Softball Wins GHSA 6A State Championship

The Cambridge Lady Bears softball team defeated Creekview 4-0 on Saturday, October 29th to win the GHSA 6A State Championship!

On October 27th the Bears traveled to Columbus to play in the State Tournament starting with game 1 against a very good Creekview team.  Top of the 1st the Grizzlies bunted and on an error made it to first.  That runner ends up scoring on another two bunts and the Grizzlies take the lead 1-0.  The Bears got nothing going on offense and pitcher Keara Napoli continued to settle in as well as the defense and held off the Grizzlies for the next four innings.  In the bottom of the 6th Mariah Kubik is walked and Taylor "Taco " Greene hits a HOME RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!! Chooch Carroll hits and gets on 1st, Gabi Givers comes as a courtesy for Chooch and steals second.  Abigail Wilson hits and Givers scores. Bears take the lead 3-0! Pitcher Napoli to Courtney Campbell at first get the first two batters out and Napoli strikes out the final batter and the Bears win the game!!!   

In the winner's bracket and the Bears move on to Friday and play the Pope Greyhounds, a region rivalry for the 5th time this year.  The Bears up first and Greene is walked.  Napoli hits a double and Greene scores.  Bears not wasting any time and they take the lead 1-0.  Quick bottom of the 1st with a K's for Napoli and a ground out to 2nd base Jensen Cheshire to Campbell at 1st and another ground out to Napoli to Campbell.  Bottom of two solid defensive plays by Cheshire, Centerfielder, Becca Cleypool and 3rd base, Heather Kipniss.  Top of the 3rd Napoli is walked, Campbell hits a single and Napoli goes to third, then scores on a wild pitch and Campbell advances, Freshman Carroll hits a single and Campbell score.  Bears will take the lead 3-0. The next 4 innings the Bears solid defense including Kipniss, Cheshire, Campbell, Wilson, Cleypool, Greene, and Kubik, and Napoli the Bears take the win!!!!

The Bears still in the winner's bracket and will have to beat the Alexander Cougars Saturday morning to move onto the Championship game. Bottom of the 1st the Cougars get a runner on and once again the defense holds them off with defensive plays made by Greene, Cheshire, Campbell, and a pick off at 1st made by catcher, Carroll.  Bottom of the 3rd the Cougars player#18 hits a Home Run first one Napoli gave up all year.  Bears down 1-0. Top of the 5th the Bears answer back with Carroll hit by a pitch and gets on 1st, Gabi Givers comes in as a courtesy runner.  Abigail Wilson lays down the sacrifice bunt and Givers advances to 2nd. Lindsey Smith hits a single and Givers scores to tie the game 1-1. Top of 6th Taylor Greene with a HOME RUN!!!!!  Her 15th on the season!!!  The Bears lead it 2-1.  Bears hold them off in the bottom of the 7th with a ground out to Cheshire and a double play for Napoli to Campbell, Bears heading to the Championship!!!!!
 

Bears taking on the Creekview Grizzlies' who battled their way back to the Championship game from the loser's bracket.  Bottom of the 2nd Chooch Carroll hits a single, and Givers comes in to run. Wilson hits a single and Givers advances to 2nd. Lindsey Smith hits a single and Givers will score.  Becca Cleypool hits and on a fielder's choice Wilson will score. Defense playing incredible and making solid plays to hold off the Grizzlies from scoring. Top of the 6th the Bears wanted some insurance Napoli hits a Home Run, Campbell hits a single, Chooch Carroll makes it to 1st on a fielder's choice and Lindsey Smith gets a single and Givers in for Carroll will score.  Bears lead it 4-0!

Bottom of the 7th you can tell the Bears wanted to finish this with an out by Greene, Cheshire, and one last strike out for Napoli, THE BEARS WIN THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!!!!!!!!!

After being the State runner up in 2014 this Bears team was hungry for a title and worked their way to earning the first State Championship in Lady Bears Softball History! 

This team was like no other, supportive, competitive, fun, determined, role models, and winners on and off the field.  

The Lady Bears finished 33-1 on the season and ranked #1 in the Region, 4th in the state and 17th in the country. 

Good luck the future Lady Bears and remember "all in all the time"!!!!!!
